Can you explain how Roy Hodgson came to be appointed as Liverpool Football Club's new manager?

The Board appointed Christian Purslow, the Managing Director, and Kenny Dalglish to oversee the process and do the interviews.

We had a long list of potential candidates and a number of telephone interviews were done to begin with to narrow the list down.

Christian and Kenny agreed a shortlist of five and then face-to-face interviews took place with those candidates.

They recommended two in the end, which last weekend was really for myself and Christian to have a run through and we chose Roy as a result of that.

What sort of qualities were the club looking for in a new manager?

It was a whole range of things, but it was looking for experience, experience in a multicultural and multinational background and someone who had seen it all before, in a sense.

We weren't looking so much for somebody who was just emerging, we wanted somebody who could, first and foremost, command the respect of the players, who had a good track record and could take us forward from where we are now.

A number of names were linked with the position. Was Roy always the club's first choice?

We didn't start with a first choice. Roy was actually the first one we interviewed, but we didn't start with a first choice.

We wanted a proper, professional selection process - draw up a list, work through the list and interview them all. You never know what can come out of interviews. Some outperform your expectations and others underperform your expectations.

He happened to be the first one we spoke to and turned out to be our first choice.

What can you tell us about the impression Roy made on the board?

He made an excellent impression. He came across as extremely thoughtful, prepared and thorough.

He wanted to focus on how he could get more out of the existing players. His focus wasn't on 'how much money can I have?' or 'I want to bring this person in or that person in' - he was really focused on 'I believe, and I've got a track record that demonstrates it, that I can take the existing players, get much better performances out of them and buy constructively to build for a better future.'

Whose final decision was it for the manager and was it a unanimous one?

It was a unanimous decision but it was a Board responsibility. So the full Board, which is the six of us - the three Executives, myself and the two owners.

Was Kenny Dalglish part of the decision?

He wasn't part of the decision, he was part of the recommendation team and he recommended Roy.

Does the club need to sell players to pay off debt?

No it doesn't, I want to be absolutely clear about that because I've heard a lot of rumours. I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have no need to sell any players to pay off the debt.

If we were to sell anyone, then the money would be reinvested in the squad.

Can you update us on the sale process?

The sale process is going pretty well according to plan. Just to remind you, I'm overseeing the sale process and Barclays Capital are running the sale process.

We've now sent out information memorandums to a number of interested parties. They haven't come back to us yet. In the programme, we wouldn't have expected them to have come back to us yet.

We're pretty well on target. I've read rumours in the press about how we've turned down this offer or we've turned down that offer. There have not been any bids made so far, so nothing has been turned down. But I wouldn't have expected there to have been any bids so far.

In terms of a valuation placed on the club, has an £800m valuation been placed and is that valuation putting off potential buyers?

I think the media have run a number of times the £800m valuation and attributed it to Tom Hicks. Let me make clear, there is no valuation figure - this is a willing seller, willing buyer transaction.

We have not put any reserve price on it. It's an auction. At the end of the day, it won't just be the best price, it will be the best buyer, which is a combination of price, intentions, financing structure and the rest.

Whether the media reports have put anybody off, there is very little evidence to that but you can never be sure.

But I just want to make it clear, there is no valuation.

Can the owners reject sensible offers for the club?

The process is again by one which the Board has the authority. The owners have committed to accepting any reasonable offer, so once we go through the process, you have an auction, out comes the best bid and that bid gets it.

Some fans fear the club won't be sold for years - are those fears valid?

No they're not and I can't see any reason why that would be the case at all. We've said from the outset we're hopeful of something before the end of the transfer period in August. That's never been an expectation as much as a hope. I'd say we're still on target with that.

Finally, as a Chelsea fan, can you assure the fans you will act in the best interests of Liverpool Football Club and its supporters?

Absolutely. I think it's very clear, as a Chairman you have certain fiduciary duties, you are committed legally to doing your best for the club. Frankly, for my reputation I wouldn't do anything else.
